DJ Artificial Intelligence Should Boost Amazon Stock, Analyst Says -- Barrons.com

By David Marino-Nachison

The growing use of technologies based on artificial intelligence could boost demand for Amazon.com's (ticker: AMZN) cloud services, lifting the stock, according to new research.

Amazon.com stock was recently up 1.3% to $1,804.09. Oppenheimer analyst Jason Helfstein, who has an Outperform rating on the shares, on Sunday boosted his price target by $110 to $2,085, a bit below FactSet's $2121 average. He cited optimism about Amazon Web Services, which accounted for nearly 60% of the company's operating income last year.

Companies are increasingly looking to artificial intelligence to create automated systems for tasks such as scanning job candidates, aiding shoppers, ordering inventory, assessing credit risk, and much more.

"We think AWS is well positioned as AI leads productivity improvements, forcing faster enterprise cloud adoption," Helfstein wrote. "Most organizations will gain access to AI through their cloud platform, driving cloud adoption; [and] AI applications and services are high-margin recurring revenues that will help lock in enterprise providers."

AWS is considered the sector leader, with Barron's earlier this year covering another analyst's optimism about the opportunity for it and Microsoft's (MSFT) offerings.

"We view Amazon as a leader in both consumer (Prime, Alexa, recommendation, etc.) and enterprise (cloud, big data natural language processing) AI," wrote Helfstein. "Similar to other cloud providers, Amazon has leveraged internally-developed AI and is now selling these services to cloud customers that want to implement AI in their businesses."

Cloud computing is a source of profitable and growing revenue for Amazon -- one that, Helfstein wrote, could eventually lead to shareholder pressure for AWS to be broken off from the broader company.

"With each new successful AWS 'vertical,' customers, regulators and investors will question whether Amazon should spin out AWS," Helfstein wrote. "We view this as possible when Amazon matures its advertising and video businesses."
